WHAT DOES A DENTAL ASSISTANT DO?

Dental assistants have a variety of responsibilities, but their primary responsibility is patient care in a dental office.  These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Prepping and seating patients

  • Taking X-rays

  • Charting patient data

  • Setting up equipment and instruments

  • Assisting the dentist during dental procedures

  • Scheduling patient appointments

  • Sterilizing Instruments​

ARE THERE ANY EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A DENTAL ASSISTANT?

The short answer is- no.  Dental Assisting is one of the few professional careers that does not require a degree.  A High school diploma/GED may make it easier to comprehend the material, however, it is not mandatory.

WHAT IS THE DENTAL ASSISTING CAREER OUTLOOK?

The average growth rate for dental assistants between 2018-2028 is double compared to the average growth rate for all other occupations according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (11%).

HOW MUCH DO DENTAL ASSISTANTS MAKE?

The average hourly wage for a dental assistant in Tucson, Arizona is $17.  The range typically falls between $14-20.  Factors influencing the hourly rate are- education, location, and years of experience, to name a few.

HOW LONG AND HOW MUCH DO DENTAL ASSISTING PROGRAMS COST?
